Portugal is place of polar opposites.

On one hand, it’s a tiny country. (California is about four and a half times bigger, for reference.) On the other, it’s home to the world’s biggest waves. (Ahem, Nazaré.)

But Praia do Norte isn’t the only big baddie in town.

There’s plenty more where that came from. And if you’re a local – like big wave savant and stoke lord, Nic Von Rupp – you know where to find those less-popular, off-the-beaten-path, non-marquee spots. Like the freakish slab in his latest edit above.

“This has been my dream,” Nic says as he prepares for the strike mission. “I can’t believe that we’re here at 6:30 in the morning. I’ve been wanting to do this mission for so long. We’ve been driving the whole Portuguese coast looking for waves.”

After a winter of hunting big waves elsewhere – Hawaii, Mavericks, and elsewhere – Nic’s back at home. And it turns out, he found heavy surf there, too…not at Nazaré.

“This is an historic moment for me and in Portuguese surfing,” Nic continues. “Just because of the fun of it. Just going out there looking for waves and getting barreled.”

And barreled he got. Super barreled.

Nic:

“I’ve been wanting to tow this wave for so long. I’ve been doing this for so long, and it just never came together. I feel like the Portuguese coast has so much potential. With the waverunner you can maximize everything. It was a perfect day.”
