Dallas Cowboys Draft the Future of Their Offensive Line with the 29th Overall Pick in the NFL Draft
BRYAN TERRY/THE OKLAHOMAN / USA TODAY NETWORK

A few years ago, the Dallas Cowboys had handily the best offensive line in the entire NFL.  Unfortunately for this organization, age affects offensive linemen harshly and this unit is seeing a dramatic dropoff.  This offseason, the end of the elite offensive line might have hit an official low when future hall of fame Tyron Smith left the franchise for the New York Jets.  At some point, this team needed to fight back against the decay that time was inflicting on this unit.

Dallas Cowboys Taking Local Offensive Tackle in Late First-Round Pick

The Dallas Cowboys made a big move to improve their offensive line by selecting University of Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton.  Guyton has been an excellent run blocker for the Sooners as he weighs in at 6’7″ and 327 pounds.  Guyton was an honorable mention All-Big-12 offensive tackle last season and has experience at both left and right tackle during his career with the Sooners.

While he didn’t enjoy a long list of accolades during his collegiate career, Guyton performed terrifically during his senior bowl performance.  On top of that, the director of the Senior Bowl himself had some terrific comments about the way Guyton showcased his skills during the event.

“From strictly a tools perspective,” Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy told Heavy reported Matt Lombardo. “You could make a good case he’s the highest ceiling tackle in this draft.  Tyler just does things athletically these other guys can’t do. He’s so light on his feet it just looks like he’s floating sometimes. Even though he’s played right tackle in college, he’s a high-level left tackle athlete.”

Guyton enjoyed a solid career at Oklahoma but his draft profile was certainly a mixed review.  He has excellent athleticism with a solid ability to pull and mirror pass rushers.  His biggest problem comes from the biggest affliction to offensive tackles: a struggle with flexibility and pad level.  Guyton needs to put on some extra muscle mass to both his upper and lower body to help him become more of a natural knee bender.  He has a tendency to give up the bull rush but showed excellent ability in picking up stunts during his time at Oklahoma.

While Guyton shows a lot of positive attributes, it appears that he isn’t currently capable of becoming an NFL starter.  Luckily for him, Dallas isn’t going to be asking him to since the organization has Tyler Smith and Terence Steele to fill in for the starting roles until Guyton becomes a more complete player.  Guyton will have the opportunity to work on his physique, build up his body, and master his fundamentals.  Look for Guyton to become a serious player at the offensive tackle position during the 2025 or 2026 seasons.
