Diamondbacks Grapple with Injury Woes: Kyle Nelson Headed to IL
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Less than 24 hours after giving up a walk-off home run to the Cardinals, Kyle Nelson was placed on the 15-day IL due to left shoulder inflammation.

Nelson is one of three Diamondbacks pitchers sidelined with shoulder issues this week, joining Miguel Castro and Merrill Kelly.

This season, coming out of the bullpen, Nelson has recorded a 4.22 ERA over 10.2 innings. In 2022, he achieved a 7-4 record with a 4.18 ERA, starting two games and appearing as a reliever in the others.

Following Nelson’s move to the IL, the Diamondbacks have recalled Justin Martinez from Triple-A Reno. This marks Martinez’s second call-up to Arizona this season; he previously made two bullpen appearances last week, allowing no earned runs and striking out two over three innings. However, Martinez struggled with control, issuing four walks in those three innings, which led to his brief return to Triple-A.

The injuries are mounting for the Diamondbacks, who now have eight pitchers on the IL, including Kyle Nelson, Merrill Kelly, Ryne Nelson, Paul Sewald, Miguel Castro, Drey Jameson, Luis Frias, and Eduardo Rodriguez.

This list does not cover the absences in their batting lineup, as Alek Thomas and Geraldo Perdomo have been out for about a month.
